Although
it is certain that this mosque was constructed in the name of Rüstem Paşa,
grandvizier and the son-in-law of Süleyman The Magnificient, the construction
started after the death of pasha in the year 1561. The characteristics of the
mosque's plan is reinforcement of a central dome by eight columns and this
feature of it is something its architect, Architect Sinan had tried for the
first time. Therefore this mosque is considered as a significant step in
Sinan's career development.
Another
point to higlight about its structure is that it is a two-storey mosque. Before
placing the mosque, Sinan laid the first level as a high platform consisting of
some spots to be used as stores and warehouses later. The purpose here were
provide some spaces that could support the mosque financially however that
first level did more than that. Since it elevated the mosque, the monument
gained a position that allowed it to perfectly fit in the silhouette of the
city.
In
addition to the location and the details in its plan, mosque is gifted with
mesmerising tiles as well. Various and many precious examples of the Nicean
tiles were used abundantly on several parts of the building such as pendantives
between the half domes, reinforcement columns, prayer hall columns and even the
cone of the sermon staircase. Floral patterns but especially tulip designs stun
the viewers of the tiles in this mosque.
